A brief history of Weddings

The word, "Wedding" actually originates from the term "gamble” or to “wager”. The word Wedding in Anglo-Saxon times was spelt "wedd" which actually meant that a man would vow to marry a woman and then give money over to the Bride's father. In the Celtic clans of ancient England weddings were considered to be a free union between two free individuals. The wedding ceremonies would took place usually in the woods - often near sources of water which were considered to be sacred at that time. A religious representative would celebrate the wedding ceremony with a series of purification acts using the four main elements of the time - water, fire, earth and wind. At the same time, a cord would be braided using with red and white yarns which represented the man and the woman. During the actual wedding ceremony the bride and groom’s hands would be tied together using an embroidered cloth. They would then drink honey-mead and also light a small candle which would represent their future life together as a couple. The ceremony would eventually end with a big feast along with banquets, dancing and music.
