Wallpaper first gained
popularity during the Renaissance period in Europe, especial amongst the gentry at the time. Prior to Wallpaper most of the gentry would hang large tapestries on their walls, which is a tradition that dated back to the middle ages. Although tapestries added colour and also some heat insulation they were also very expensive which meant that only the very rich could afford them. Once the ideal of hanging wallpaper on the wall appeared it soon took off in popularity due to the much lower cost, making it available to many more people. Wallpaper in the early days would tend to contain a scene rather than a pattern, this was mainly because that's what tapestries would have also. Often these paper scenes were just hung on the walls much like a tapestry would be rather than be pasted - which is where the term 'hanging wallpaper' originates from. During the 1500's the two European countries which lead the way in wallpaper design were mainly England and France it was around this time that the repeating wallpaper pattern emerged. By the mid 1800's England had become the leading wallpaper producer and exported vast quantities of wallpaper to the rest of Europe.
