A brief history of Vases

The History of the Glass Vase goes back a long way. The earliest evidence of a glass vase was found in Mesopotania and was dated to be from around 1,000 BC. The techniques used today to make crystal or glass vases can be traced back to the Roman times. As the Roman empire expanded across the European continent, so did their crystal and glass vases which meant that they also became an item that could be traded with other cultures or in some cases would be the container for a liquid that was being traded. Roman Glass makers developed many advanced techniques including enamelling, gliding and staining, one famous Roman made vase is known as the Portland Vase, which consisted of violet-blue glass with several white cameo figures stuck around the outside. After the collapse of the Roman Empire many of the glass making skills were mainly also lost across the whole of Europe. However one small island near Venice called Murano managed to retain all of the Roman glass making skills and successfully managed to develop them further into superior quality glass items, glass vases included. It is still possible to buy a vase today made from Murano glass.
