Brief History of Console Tables

Console tables started out as a French innovation from the 18th Century. Originally they were more like a small half moon shaped shelf that was actually screwed to the wall and was a handy place to either make notes or perform small tasks such as checking the contents of a purse etc. The term console actually refers to the curved bracket that originally supported the small table to the wall. Over time these small tables that were screwed to the wall evolved front legs to make them look as if they were free standing, until eventually they actually did become free standing items of furniture with four legs. At this point  the practice of screwing them to the wall ceased. Console Tables became very popular as an item of furniture for a hallway or any area where space was tight. This was because of their narrow width which still allowed people to pass by without blocking the way.
