Brief History of Coffee Tables

Technically a coffee table should be a long table in length and low in height. Before they were known as Coffee tables in the western world other countries had tables that fitted the coffee table type of description which included Japan and also the Ottoman empire. From around the late 1800's the concept of a coffee table was becoming very popular with the Victorians in Britain. Because of the popularity of revivalism at that time many Victorian furniture manufacturers started to make coffee tables from in different styles based on past fashions. Therefore Louis XVI and Georgian Style coffee tables started to appear, however there is no existing evidence to suggest that these false replicas ever had an original counterpart. In 1938 a coffee table definition was scripted by one Joseph Aronson who stated that for a table to be classed as being a coffee table it must it must be "A low wide table to be used in front of a sofa or a couch". Coffee tables really started to take off with the introduction of Televisions into the home starting in the 1950's. This is because they were low enough to place cups and plates on in front of the TV without blocking the view.
