   4 Lighting Solutions that will

transform your Kitchen

A well-designed lighting plan has the power to transform an average kitchen into a beautiful spot in the home. It can make a small kitchen larger,  compensate for natural lighting and disguise awkward spaces.

With kitchens increasingly performing on a multifunctional level, the lighting design must evolve to cater for cooking, dining, relaxing and entertaining. It's therefore important to invest in a scheme that not only provides good task lighting but also creates the ideal ambience.

Here are four lighting solutions to brighten up your kitchen.

1. Task Lighting

Task lighting is aimed at directing and focusing light where you need it. The lights are installed in areas where you'll be doing most of your work such as cutting, meal prepping and washing dishes. Some of the best locations to install task lights include under cabinets, over the counters, at the sink, over any tables, and any other work surface.

Task lights come in different versions including fluorescent, incandescent, and high- and low voltage versions. The nice thing about these individual light fixtures is that they can be added or removed if you need more or less light. Additionally, since no holes are cut into the ceiling during installation, they eliminate the risk of air leakage.

One of the downsides to task lighting is that it consumes a lot of energy. It also has the same shadowing problem as recessed lights. But since track lights can be moved, you can move a light to eliminate the shadow problem.

2. Feature and Accent Lighting

Another lighting solution you can add to your kitchen is accent or feature lighting.  Accent lighting is used to highlight architectural details, artwork, a beautiful material and other points of interest in the kitchen.  That Some popular kitchen accent lighting fixtures include:

  • Puck lights to illuminate glass front cabinets.

  • Dot lights to highlight individual items or those in a series.

  • Toe-kick lights can be installed under the cabinets to light up the floor.

They are helpful to those who like a midnight snack but don't want bright overhead lighting that can wake them up.

Other forms of accent lighting include metal halides, fibre optics, low-voltage halogen lights, and LED lighting.

If you're a homeowner looking to highlight a design feature in your kitchen, visit lights.co.uk. The online store offers a broad selection of accent kitchen lighting fixtures including wall lights, LED pot lights and track lights.

3. Ambient Lighting

This is lighting that illuminates the whole room rather than targeting a spot. It transforms the mood of the room, making it a primary social space in the home.

You can use decorative pendant lights, well-placed recessed lights and/or a chandelier to create warmth and ambience.

If you want to brighten the entire kitchen, consider using fixtures with multiple bulbs or multiple lights spread across the room.

4. Decorative Lighting

Decorative lighting, also known as statement lighting, is lighting that exists as a decorative element -  this can be the fixture itself, the sparkle or the shadow it produces.

Types of lighting fixtures you can use to make a statement include:

  • Chandeliers - while chandeliers aren't common in kitchens, a modern chandelier can look nice over a kitchen table or island, depending on the room's décor.

  • Pendant lights - pendants are a popular choice for kitchen island lighting. They come in a variety of colours, materials, styles, shapes, and sizes.

  • Wall lights - wall lights are a great way to make a statement to what may otherwise be a blank space.

The kitchen is not only a location for preparing and cooking food but also a social space. It is therefore important to choose a lighting scheme that makes it functional, warm and welcoming. By using these four lighting solutions, you can set the right mood for your kitchen. Just make sure to talk to your designer if you have any concerns about how to incorporate the solutions into your kitchen.
