What is Reiki? Reiki is a
Japanese word representing Universal Life Energy, the energy which is
all around us. Reiki, when activated and applied for purposes of
healing, addresses body, mind and spirit. It accelerates the body's
ability to heal physical ailments and opens the mind and spirit to the
cause of disease and pain, the necessity for taking responsibility for
one's life and the joys of balanced wellness. The Usui System of Reiki
is a natural healing art which uses Reiki in these ways. History of
Reiki Reiki was born
out of the experience and dedication of Dr. Mikao Usui, a
Japanese Christian educator who, in the late 19th century, responded
to a challenge from his students by undertaking an extensive
study of the healing phenomena of history's greatest spiritual
leaders. Through travel, study, research and meditation, he evolved a
healing system based on ancient Buddhist teachings written in
Sanskrit. He spent the rest of his life practising and teaching this
method of natural healing, which usually involves the laying on of
hands. The Usui System
of Reiki continues to be taught by Reiki Masters who are trained in
the original traditions of Reiki and whose personal and professional
lives are committed to this healing art and the lifestyle which it
engenders. Who Can
Benefit From Reiki?
Everyone who
wishes to change in some way and accepts that, though others can help,
ultimately we re each responsible for our own healing and
transformation. Reiki gives you
the awareness, courage and ability to change what can be changed and
the wisdom to understand and accept what cannot be changed. What Happens
During a Treatment?
Before a Reiki
treatment no medical history will be taken, so the only details
provided by you will be contact details. During a treatment you will relax, fully clothed, on a
couch or seated while the practitioner moves around you placing hands
in specific healing positions. There is no direct contact with
personal areas of the body and there is no pressure on the body making
it ideal for treating all ages and conditions. The Reiki energy flows
wherever it is required. A sensation of
warmth, cold, or tingling may be experienced under the hands,
accompanied by a general feeling of relaxation and well being. Receiving Reiki is a very relaxing and soothing
experience. There is no belief system attached to Reiki so anyone
can receive a Reiki treatment, the only prerequisite is the desire to
be healed. A treatment
session can last for an hour or 90 minutes. A
course of treatments may be taken. What
does the word 'reiki' mean? Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a
form of healing using universal life energy channelled through the
practitioner to the recipient helping to harmonise body, mind and
spirit. Reiki is a Japanese name
consisting of 2 words. The word Rei means "universal," or
present everywhere. Research into the esoteric meaning of the word
reveals that it is more accurately interpreted to mean "spiritual
consciousness" or "supernatural knowledge." This
"God-consciousness" is said to be all-knowing, able to see
the root of all problems and then heal them. Many cultures, past
and present have shared the belief in this unseen force and in the
interconnectedness of all life. It is believed that one is more
vulnerable to stress and illness when reserves of life energy are low. "Ki" means life force energy.
Other names for ki include Chi, as the Chinese call it, Ti or Ki in
Hawaiian, and Prana in Sanskrit. Various cultures that recognize its
existence have given it many other names. As long as something is alive, ki
circulates through it and around it. When ki dies, the life force
departs and the organism dies. Ki is also the source from which
emotions, thoughts, and spiritual life are drawn. The Chinese have studied ki, or as
they call it, "chi," for thousands of years and place great
importance on it. One of their classic tomes lists thirty-two
different kinds of chi and is over 4,000 years old. Ki is also used by practitioners of
the martial arts for mental development and physical training. It is
used in Pranayama (meditative breathing exercises) and by shamans in
many cultures for divination, psychic awareness, and healing.
