Forget carb counting and diet plans: lose weight with natural eating techniques and self hypnosis

I really like the idea from Paul McKenna that the best way to lose weight is:

1  Eat when you are hungry

2  Eat what you really want, not what you think you should have

3  Eat consciously, enjoy each mouthful

3  Stop when you think you're full

The idea being that naturally slim people do this automatically is probably fairly true.  People have always remarked that I can eat what I want to - I would eat fish and chips and enjoy chocolate, but then again I felt no need to keep snacking or eat when watching TV.

Take away the feeling of guilt about food, relax and try other solutions to stress and enjoy eating!  The pounds will fall away.

This ideal method is complemented in the TV show with Paul McKenna's self motivational hypnosis.  Now you can use the additional  support of the self hypnosis CD from Logicworks.

Relax your way to a slimmer you in time for summer on a beach!

How do I lose weight?

Top healthy ways for weight loss and dieting from the experts:

Can Water help me lose weight?

'Must drink more water, must drink…' We all know that the wet stuff is essential for life - but did you know it can help you lose weight?

Water keeps us cool, lubricates our joints and flushes toxins from our bodies, but admit it, how many of us really drink the recommended two litres a day? For those of us who do struggle to drink enough, the great news is that water actually can help you in the battle against the bulge.

Now for the science bit
Your metabolism is the bio-mechanical process that breaks food down and turns it into energy. In a nutshell, it consumes calories. Since metabolism is your best ally in the frontline against weight, you want it to be working at full speed. Water is the fuel that drives metabolism's chemical reactions. So, if you're not drinking enough, you won't burn as many calories as you can. Simple.

Running on empty?
If you're not drinking enough water - at least 2 litres a day - here's how your body is being affected:

  • Your weight loss will slow right down. This is because about 2.5 litres of water is naturally lost through daily bodily functions such as going to the loo and sweating. If you don't replenish this water you'll soon become dehydrated, and your metabolism will be among the first to shut down. So, if you're dieting and you can't seem to shift the weight, perhaps it's because you aren't drinking enough water.

  • Your digestion will suffer. Water is essential for digestion and elimination. Poor digestion means you won't be absorbing the goodness from your food. Your body in turn will send up signals (read: cravings) for food that has minerals your body lacks.

  • You'll feel 'fake' hunger. When dehydrated, your body sends out the same signals that prompt you to eat and you may end up answering that response with food. Water will not only curb those hunger pangs, but it will fill you up. Fitness trainer Bob Greene recommends drinking a tall glass of water half an hour before a meal to fill the void and prevent overeating.
  • You won't get the full benefit of exercise. Your metabolism increases with exercise, and as we mentioned earlier, water is essential to maximise your metabolism. Drink plenty of water before, during and after your workout.

Mine's a pint (or five)?
How much H2O should you drink? The British Dietetic Association suggests adults drink 2.5 litres (that's a little over five pints) of fluids a day, which can include fruit juices, squash and weak tea and coffee. This amount is recommended for maintaining your daily fluid requirements. If your aim is to lose weight, add another 750ml to that and you'll aid your metabolism and help create new muscle weight.

  • You know you're drinking enough water if your urine is clear and odourless (not including your first urination of the morning).

  • But sorry, ladies, even though it's technically fluid, alcohol can't be included in your daily intake. That's because booze is dehydrating - so if you are going to have a tipple or two, drink one glass of water for every glass of alcohol.

Drinking loads of water will not make you retain water, but dehydration will. If your body feels worried that it's not getting enough water, it will hold on to what it has.

Water does make you pee and you will notice more trips to the loo, but you can lessen the effects by drinking throughout the day rather than chugging a couple of glasses in one go. If you drink more than one or two glasses in one sitting, your body will want to get rid of it and you won't reap the benefits.

Although some dieticians disagree on this, sparkling water, weak tea or weak coffee can count toward your daily fluid intake. But because they have a diuretic effect, try to limit the amount. Consider drinking herbal tea instead. If you are going to have an espresso, add an extra serving of water to your daily intake.

It's as easy as one, two, three…

  1. Keep water by your workstation. Instead of munching on a biscuit or crisps, take a sip from your water bottle.

  2. If the thought of consuming that much water makes you queasy, be strategic. Drink when you are most thirsty: when you wake up, when you have your meals, during your workouts. Carry a bottle of water with you and you'll be more likely to sip your way to your daily amount.

  3. Make your water taste better by buying a water jug with a filter. You can also make your own flavoured water by cutting up a lemon, apple or cucumber and adding to the water. Or mix with a tiny splash of squash or juice. Try making herbal iced tea by pouring boiling water over four tea bags, letting it steep for 10 minutes and diluting to taste with cold water.

And there's more
Although we diet for health reasons, it's often the fact that we'll look better that keeps us motivated. Drinking plenty of water will give you that dewy, fresh-faced look by plumping the cells in your skin so lines are less visible. Water flushes impurities away and reduces blemishes. And, according to the American Holistic Association, water has a very high concentration of negative ions, which can bring about a feeling of well-being.

Sitting by a lake or ocean can add to your sense of peace; a benefit for emotional eaters. Swimming is great exercise and the fact that you are immersed in water means you'll also get the emotional benefit of those negative ions. So what are you waiting for? Jump in now, and before you know it, your weight loss will be going swimmingly.

How many meals should I eat?

Don't starve!

Three main meals and a snack every day will help you to learn about healthy eating and the importance of controlling portion sizes in losing weight and maintaining weight loss.  Low fat plans, vegetarian plans and low GI plans are also useful to consider.

Stress can make you fat.

These two factors are not only bad for your health, they also ruin any feelings of well-being. But there is something you can do. It's not something people think of when they consider weight loss, yet it's free and widely available. It's called sleep and relaxation

The following book extract is taken from Jonny Bowden's Shape Up Workbook by Jonny Bowden (published by Perseus) and reproduced with kind permission.

To understand how it works you have to understand a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol is needed and used by every single cell in the body. It's made by the adrenal glands, two little nut-shaped fellows that sit on top of your kidneys. Among other things, cortisol is an anti-inflammatory (the widely prescribed 'cortisone' is a derivative). But cortisol's most famous role is that of a stress hormone.

The fight or flight hormone
When your cavemen and cavewomen ancestors saw a wild boar in the woods, their adrenals would shoot a load of cortisol into their bodies, telling them in no uncertain terms that the time had come to pick up a weapon or run like the devil. Cortisol helps the body release sugar into the bloodstream, sugar that can be used for the immediate energy needed for either of the above actions - running or fighting. In fact, during any stressful time - including exercise, by the way - the body releases more cortisol, hence its nickname as a 'fight or flight' hormone.

Why do we stress eat?
Cortisol is not a 'bad' hormone. As with most things, the problem is when it's out of balance. According to Dr. Pamela Peeke, a leading expert in the field, chronic unrelenting stress (of the kind most of us live with every day) can have a dangerous effect on the body. It makes you more vulnerable to colds, flu, fatigue, and infection, and, if that weren't enough, it gives you a raging appetite in the bargain. Why? Because one of its 'purposes' is to help your body 'refuel' for the next emergency. Hence, when your body's on constant cortisone overload, you eat. She calls this typical reaction 'stress eating', and it has a solid physiological reason: The foods you crave when stressed out (almost always carbohydrates and fat) 'replenish the calories used up during the stress response - which, in simplest terms, is one of the main ways that activating the stress response on a constant basis can make you fat.'

Now if stress is a factor in weight gain - and it almost certainly is a big one - what's the logical conclusion? Reduce it! And with it, your waistline.

Today's stress levels
Most people are living lives that put an inordinate amount of stress on their systems. We're working too hard. We're managing too many projects (including other people's lives). We're worrying too much. We're sleeping too little. We have too little time for ourselves. Our poor adrenal glands, which were meant to simply be an emergency system for occasional use, have been pressed into overdrive - their owners are running on empty and refueling with junk to keep from noticing. Is it any wonder so many of us are overtired, sleep-deprived, immune-suppressed, depressed, frequently sick, and typically overweight?

Take care of yourself
So what's the secret weapon? Simple. Stress reduction. (By the way, one of the biggest stressors is continual dieting and worrying about weight!)

Do some deep breathing exercises at least a few times a day. Find something that gives you spiritual solace. Take care of yourself, not just in the obvious ways, but in the ways that only you would understand.

Change your sleeping habits
Sleep experts estimate that more than half of the population is walking around in some degree of sleep deprivation. The problem is compounded by our refusal to take time for ourselves - if it's not related to work or family, we just don't do it.

So do it now. Begin by going to bed earlier (staying in bed later is much more difficult for most people). Try banning television from the bedroom. Take a warm bath. Put on soothing music. Eventually, you'll get the hang of it. Reducing stress is not only good for your health, your immune system, and your psychological well-being; it's good for your waistline as well.

Eat well to relieve stress and lose weight!

Try our power breakfast, lunch and dinner plan to boost your energy and your mood

When we feel stressed, the first thing we tend to do is reach for immediate fixes, in the form of high fat and sugar-filled foods. However, indulging in these kinds of comfort treats will not do you any favours in the long run. In fact, they may even make you feel more anxious and inhibit sleep. Most of us succumb to illnesses when we're feeling low, stressed or depressed. Ironically, it is at these times, when we should be concentrating on our diet, that we're probably stuffing our faces with foods like chocolate, crisps and alcohol, which only satisfy us in the short-term.

Take a look at the following menu, which incorporates various foods to help you cope with stress and feel more energetic and alert. Aim to include foods with a variety of colours, to ensure that your diet looks appealing, which usually means it also contains all the stress and disease fighting nutrients available in a diverse diet. All recipes below serve two people.

Power breakfast

1 bowl Swiss muesli
A handful each tropical dried fruit and sunflower seeds
1 glass calcium fortified soya milk
1 glass of vegetable juice, like V8

Energy sustaining lunch

1 bowl of Quinoa salad with nuts and raisins
(Combine 110g quinoa with 300ml water, boil and simmer for 10 minutes, then cool. Next, add 25g each raisins, pine nuts and canned mandarin orange segments, along with 1 tbsp chopped mint leaves, 1 chopped spring onion, 1 tbsp olive oil and pinch salt and pepper).
1 bowl of tomato sweet pepper soup
(Roast 4 yellow peppers in the oven on the highest setting for five to 10 minutes or until charred. Put them in a plastic bag and let them steam for 10 minutes. Then remove peppers from the bag, peel off the skins and coarsely chop. Sauté 2 finely chopped onions in 4 tsp oil for about 10 minutes, then combine 12 medium chopped and de-skinned tomatoes, 1-2 litres vegetable stock and roasted peppers and bring to boil. Simmer uncovered for 30 minutes. Transfer soup to food processor and blend until smooth. Return to pan and heat through. Serve with fresh, chopped basil over the top).

Tension releasing dinner

Barley and vegetables pilaf
(Fry a small chopped onion and 2 crushed garlic cloves in 1 tbsp olive oil. Then add 1 chopped courgette and cook for 5 minutes. Next, add 150ml chicken stock, bring to the boil, add 3 ripe tomatoes and cook for about 3 minutes. Finally, add 110g cooked pearl barley, 110g toasted pine nuts, a handful of chopped basil, add pinch cayenne pepper and salt and pepper to taste).
1 sliced peach served over 125g low fat ricotta cheese

Stress reducing snacks

1 papaya
1 slice pumpernickel bread with fruit spread
1 glass of carrot or tomato juice
1 handful of lychees or kumquats
