You've found the perfect area, the crime rate is low, you've checked the sold house prices and you can afford to live there, there's entertainment nearby and you've fallen in love with the place. There's a neighbourhood watch scheme in place, and the local constabulary is very visible. That's great! So how can you ensure that your new home remains unsullied, your refuge against the outside world? Follow these safety tips for all
homes:
Invest in a good alarm
The crime rate may be low in your chosen area, but people will be people. Buying the best system you can will ensure they stay where they belong - outside.
Exterior locks
Make sure you have the best available. They can be a little more expensive but they tend to last longer and the peace of mind they bring is invaluable.
Extra keys
Don't leave spares under the mat/on top of the doorway/ in the plant pot. 'Professional' burglars will know all these places and here's where they'll look first. Leave spares with a trustworthy neighbour for emergencies.
Don't
advertise
Keep blinds closed or invest in sheer curtains when you have expensive equipment in your room. Let the light in, keep prying eyes out!
Valuables
Buy a safe/safety deposit box to keep small items like jewellery and cash in. Don't leave it lying around.
Notes on the door
A big no-no. These will advertise to thieves that there is nobody home.
Mail and other deliveries
Arrange with a neighbour to collect mail/newspapers/milk so there is nothing lying around that may tell people that you're not at home. Also, disconnect the telephone. A ringing phone is a great indicator that the house is empty.
Unexpected knocks
Check to see who is on the doorstep before opening the door. Use a spyhole or a sturdy chain. Insist on seeing identification for unexpected workmen and signs deterring cold callers are widely available.
