Brown's Budget Latest 2007 

Stamp Duty, personal allowances, taxation, inheritance tax

  • NHS to get an extra £10bn this year; the investment levels for 2008-11 will be decided in the upcoming spending review.

  • Public investment in science up 25 per cent to £6.3bn by 2010.

  • Corporation tax to be reformed with focus on research and development, skills, intellectual property and environmental aspects.

  • Corporation tax rate to be cut from 30p in the pound to 28p from April 2008.

  • Brown to raise tax on small business to 22p in the pound by 2009.

  • Chancellor announces £50m fund established to protect African rainforests.

  • Insulation grants worth up to £4,000 to be offered.

  • ”Zero carbon” homes up to £0.5m in value to be exempt from stamp duty.

  • VAT to be cut from 17.5 per cent to 5 per cent on environmental products for the home.

  • Landfill tax up £8 per year from next year until 2011.

  • Tax relief on empty business property to be restricted to 6 months and to 3 months on empty retail and office space.

  • Sir Nicholas Stern and Professor King to report on renewable energy innovation in transport.

  • Brown says vehicle emissions cut by 2 million tonnes since 1997.

  • Annual fuel duty levy suspended once again until October.

  • Chancellor rejects proposals to levy VAT on airline tickets as ”not thought through”.

  • Beer up 1p per pint from midnight on Sunday, cider up 1p per litre, wine up 5p a bottle, sparkling wine up 7p a bottle, duty on spirits remains frozen.

  • 20 cigarettes up by 11p from midnight tonight.

  • Chancellor to raise fuel duty by 2p a litre in 2008 and by 1.8p in 2009.

  • VAT on nicotine replacement products cut from 17.5 per cent to 5 per cent.

  • Gaming duty to be aligned to 15 per cent of profits.

  • £80m fund established to help small community organisations.

  • Brown says working tax credit up by £1bn per year.

  • Tax on highest polluting vehicles or 4x4s up by 30 per cent to £300.

  • ”Partnership for jobs” programme established with major retail chains to encourage the unemployed back into work.

  • Small businesses to get £2000 or £3000 for training out of work young people.

  • Proposals for a transferable tax allowance between married people rejected.

  • Inheritance tax allowance to rise from £285,000 to £350,000 by 2010.

  • Chancellor says VAT on a specified list of housing alterations needed by old people living with children reduced from 17.5 per cent to 5 per cent.

  • Cash ISA allowance up 20 per cent to £3,600 from April next year.

  • Capital gains tax allowance rises from £8,800 to £9,200 this year.

  • Child benefit for the first child up 15 per cent by 2010 to £20 per week.

  • Level at which family with 2 children pay tax currently at £22,500 set to rise to £24,250 by 2009.

  • Tax allowances for under 75s pensioners set to rise to £9,770 by 2011 from £7,280 currently.

  • Pension Credits to continue to rise in line with earnings.

  • Brown says 10p income tax band to be scrapped from April 2009.

  • Top rate income tax to be applied from earnings of £43,000 rather than from £38,000.

  • Total education budget to reach £74bn by 2010.

  • Basic rate of income tax to fall from 22p to 20p from next April.

  • Chancellor Gordon Brown sits down at the end of his 11th Budget at 13:19 GMT.
